It’s that time of year again, when you find yourself driving furiously across state lines because your puritanical lawmakers don’t want you sparking up some Black Cats in your backyard. Before you go, check this list of the fireworks that are allowed near you.
According to the American Pyrotechnics Association, 47 states plus DC permit some type of consumer fireworks. Here’s the entire list. Now keep in mind this isn’t getting down to the county or city level—where it really matters for the most of us. California might allow regular folks to buy fireworks but it is certainly not allowed here in Los Angeles, not even the “safe and sane” ones (yet that doesn’t seem to stop anyone in my neighborhood from shooting them off).
Since last year’s 4th there have actually been some encouraging changes when it comes to states and explosives. New York now permits “handheld and ground-based sparkling devices” (what the rest of us call sparklers) and as of July 1, 2015, Georgia has eased its restrictions and allows all consumer fireworks. Okay, you have all the information, so go forth and blow shit up, but be careful out there.
