Serena Williams Beats Venus, Advances to U.S. Open Semifinals

Meeting for the 27th time as professionals (and 5000th+ time overall)Serena and Venus Williams faced-off in the U.S. Open quarterfinals tonight. The winner, for the 16th time in their official sibling rivalry, was Serena which keeps her hopes of claiming a fourth-straight Open title alive. She dispatched her 23-seeded sister in three sets (6-2, 1-6, 6-3) and, as she does seemingly every time out, continued to cement her status as the No. 1 women’s tennis player alive.

The match ended with an ace:

As well as some sisterly love:

Okay, now that that’s over, Serena’s next match comes against Italy’s43rd-ranked Roberta Vinci who, earlier today, advanced to her first Grand Slam Semifinal in 44 tries. If Serena is able to dispatch Vinci, and whoever her opponent will be in the championship, she’ll have claimed her 22nd all-time Grand Slam Singles title, which would tie her withSteffi Graf for the most in the Open Era (and the second highest total all-time).

In case you’re wondering, which is exactly what that last sentence was intended to do, Australian Margaret Court won 24. Which is likely to stand for *does math in head* not long.
