Perhaps Disney has cracked some sort of code by appealing to both families with kids and that subset of adults who are way into dressing up like animals, but the PG-rated Zootopia—which has alternately been referred to as bait for “furries” and a disguised examination of racial profiling—is destroying at the box office this weekend.
The film opened with $73.7 million at the domestic box office to set a new record for a Disney animated movie, topping the previous record holder, Frozen, which opened with $67.4 million back in 2013, according to Mashable. Zootopia made more than $130 million worldwide.
The movie also knocked off Deadpool, which has been No. 1 at the box office for three weeks running, and has been setting records of its ownfor an R-rated movie. After this weekend, Deadpool has made $311 million in North America, putting the movie in the top 50 highest-grossing domestic films of all time.
Deadpool dropped to third place, with the new, critically-slammed action flick London Has Fallen starring Gerard Butler and new Snapchatter Morgan Freeman taking the No. 2 spot this week with just over $21 million at the box office, which sadly is only slightly less than its Rotten Tomatoes rating of 25 percent. That amount puts it way behind what Olympus Has Fallen did in its opening weekend.
