Prince was a prolific musician during his lifetime, releasing 39 studio albums as well as many other side projects. Nonetheless, he’s long kept a vault of his unreleased music at his home in Chanhassen, Minn. Only Prince possessed a key to the vault, and as such, its contents have always been a mystery: until today that is.
According to a report from ABC News, the vault was drilled open today by Bremer Trust, the Minnesota-based company put in charge of the late singer’s estate. Prince reportedly had no will at the time of his death, and his assets are likely to be divided between his siblings. According to the ABC report, the vault contains enough music for his record label to put out an album per year for nearly the next century, although it is unclear what is planned for the music at this point.
He once spoke of the vaulted songs during an appearance on The Viewin 2012, predicting “one day, someone will get to release them. I don’t know that I’ll get to release them. There’s just so many.” Clearly that day may be approaching faster than he ever believed.
