Forensics Official: Flight MS804 Evidence ‘Points Towards an Explosion’

Since last Friday, search teams have been gathering debris from the crash site of Flight MS804. Now, an Egyptian forensics official has admitted that from what’s been recovered so far it seems likely there was an explosion aboard the airplane.

Speaking to Reuters, an anonymous Egyptian forensics official explained that “[t]he size of the remains points towards an explosion, the biggest part was the size of a palm.” Associated Press reports that an official—it’s not clear whether it’s the same one or not—explained that “there isn’t even a whole body part, like an arm or a head.”

Reuters adds that “about 23 bags of body parts” have now been collected from the crash site. It also points out that no traces of explosives have yet been identified.

It’s still too early to say exactly what happened to the airplane, which fell out of radar contact while flying at 37,000ft. Aboard the craft were 56 passengers, seven crew members and three security personnel.

Search teams continue to hunt for the aircraft’s black box.
