Muhammad Ali Hospitalized With Respiratory Issue

Muhammad Ali has been hospitalized due to a respiratory issue, according to a family spokesman. The 74-year-old boxing icon is said to be in “fair” condition.

“Ali, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, is being treated by his team of doctors,” rep Bob Gunnell said in a statement to The Huffington Post. “A brief hospital stay is expected. At this time, the Muhammad Ali family respectfully requests privacy.”

Ali was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s three decades ago, in 1984. His appearances in public have been few and far between as of late, as rumors of his weakening condition swell.

The Greatest was also admitted to a hospital in early 2015 with a urinary tract infection, just weeks after he was bedridden with what was first believed to be a mild case of pneumonia.

Perhaps best known for his 1975 “Thrilla in Manila” bout with Joe Frazier, Ali, born Cassius Clay, has been a figure of peace and progress for over five decades now. Even in sickness, he has continued his charitable work.
