EU Regulators Near Decision on Sony/ATV’s Jackson Buyout

Sony/ATV Music’s rivals have aired concerns with European regulators about the publishing giant’s move to acquire the Michael Jackson estate’s portion of the joint venture. EU antitrust officials have a provisional deadline of Aug. 1 to decide whether to let Sony buy out Jackson’s 50 percent stake in the company, which owns the publishing rights of most Beatles songs, as well as music by Taylor Swift, Whitney Houston and others.

328 foot-long floating barrier will collect ocean trash

There are numerous efforts underway to clean the world’s oceans, but The Ocean Cleanup is testing what may be both the simplest and the most ambitious. It just launched a 328 foot-long prototype floating barrier that will collect trash floating in the North Sea. If it can survive the rough conditions of those waters, the plan is to deploy a 62 mile-long (!) barrier in the Pacific Ocean and reduce the size of the notorious Great Pacific Garbage Patch — the hope is to halve the size of the trash field in 10 years.

Last year, researchers estimated that California had lost 63 trillion gallons of water over the course of 18 months of drought. Now, a huge reservoir of underground water—three times bigger than engineers thought—has been found under California. But it still won’t solve the state’s drought troubles.
