The RIAA has announced Jay Z‘s new album 4:44 has been certified platinum. The announcement came with a photo of Hov standing next to his new plaque, along with the message: “Props to JAY, he’s done it again!”
It’s also up on the RIAA site:
Congrats to Jay! But also, how Sway?
It’s unclear at this time how 4:44 was able to move one million units in less than a week, though it’s a possibility Jay Z struck some sort of deal with Sprint like how he did in 2013 with Samsung. If you remember, that deal included an automatic one million downloads of his album Magna Carta Holy Grail for Samsung users.
Aside from that, it’s unlikely his album amassed that many units off streaming alone as it’s currently only available on Tidal. There was also a free download option that popped up over the weekend.
According to Variety, the photo opp took place before 4:44 was released, with a source saying that while the million mark is a combination of Tidal streams and Sprint downloads, the “download numbers alone pushed the album past 1 million units.” Shades of the Samsung deal.
