‘Black Panther’ Scores Best First Week of Any Marvel Cinematic Universe Movie

Black Panther is doing amazing right now. The movie is saturating the media and winning over masses of fans and critics. As a result, the film is absolutely crushing it at the box office.

Black Panther just broke another Marvel record. The movie had the highest-grossing first week in Marvel Cinematic Universe history, according to comicbook.com. The film, which stars Michael B. Jordan and Chadwick Boseman, reportedly earned $292 million in North America in its first week. It earned $27.6 million around the world Thursday.

The Avengers (2012) held the previous MCU record; it earned $270 million in its first week. It took The Avengers nine days to get to $300 million in North America; it looks certain that Black Panther will hit that mark in eight days.

Black Panther hasn’t been popular only in the United States. It brought in additional $228 million internationally. That brings its first-week total to $520 million.

Its second-weekend gross numbers already look historic. Black Panther is heading for a roughly $90 million weekend across 4,020 North American sites, according to Variety. Other estimates place its expected income above $100 million.

If its pace continues, it would reach No. 5 on the list of highest-grossing second weekends of all-time, taking the place of Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). No. 1 on that list is the 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens($149 million).

For reference, the highest-grossing movies of 2017 brought in just over $1 billion during their entire run.

Director Ryan Coogler is unstoppable right now.
