Netflix Orders Scripted Series About the Life of Selena Quintanilla

Netflix has ordered a scripted series based on the life of Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla.

According to Variety, the drama will be a coming of age story about the late singer’s rise to fame, as well as the “life-changing choices she and her family have to make as they navigate success, family, and music.”

“Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory,” said Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s sister. “With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives. We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”

The series comes more than two decades after Selena’s untimely death in 1995. It follows the highly-praised biopic starring Jennifer Lopez in 1997 titled Selena. Moisés Zamora will serve as writer and executive producer. Jaime Dávila, Rico Martinez, Suzette Quintanilla, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., and Simran A. Singh will also executive produce. Campanario Entertainment is producing the show.

Earlier this year news broke that ABC ordered a pilot of an untitled musical about the Quintanilla family, but that deal later fell through. This new show will employ a majority of the creative team behind that project.

“Selena and the entire Quintanilla family are an inspiration to many and especially to me, a millennial of the same heritage,” said Jaime Dávila, president of Campanario Entertainment. “Selena’s career achievements are legendary, but our scripted series will focus on the incredible story of a Mexican-American family and how an extraordinary young woman transcended categories and borders to become a global star. I can’t imagine a better partner than Netflix to celebrate Selena and her family’s lives.”

To this day, Selena is regarded as one of the greatest Tejano artists and iconic Mexican-Americans in history. Hopefully the show Netflix is cooking up with do justice to her legacy.
