The World Is Getting a Black Box to Document Civilization’s Downfall

A project by the name of Earth’s Black Box is now in the process of constructing a giant monolith that’ll sit on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia, and function as an indestructible black box that’ll record the very path towards catastrophe for our planet. The initiative is led by marketing communications company Clemenger BBDO, which is working in partnership with researchers from the University of Tasmania, and construction is expected to be complete by early 2022, although recordings have already begun.

According to reports, the structure is constructed from three-inch-thick steel and carries an array of solar panels on the roof to power its massive inventory of storage devices inside. Developers expect that the existing storage can last anywhere between 30 to 50 years, although they’re currently working to create a longer-term solution.

“Unless we dramatically transform our way of life, climate change and other man-made perils will cause our civilization to crash,” reads the statement on the project’s website. “Earth’s Black Box will record every step we take towards this catastrophe. Hundreds of data sets, measurements and interactions relating to the health of our planet will be continuously collected and safely stored for future generations.”
