Activists, Diplomats to Gather for Ceremony Honoring Hundreds of Enslaved People Who Died in Shipwreck Off South Africa’s Coast

After the remains from a 1794 slave ship was discovered off South Africa’s shores, a ceremony has been arranged in order to honor the more than 200 enslaved men and women who drowned at sea.

The ceremony will take place on Tuesday on Cape Town’s popular Clifton beach.

It will be a solemn ceremony and a grim reminder of the dark history that so many African ancestors were forced to experience.
