Apple and Google will testify to Senate on data privacy September 26th

More tech companies are about to face congressional scrutiny. Leaders from Amazon, Apple, AT&T, Charter and Google are scheduled to testify before a US Senate panel at a data privacy hearing on September 26th. Senators will grill the companies on their existing approaches to privacy, how Congress can press for “clear privacy expectations” and how firms will adapt to stricter requirements like the European Union’s GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act.

Justice Department appeals approval of Time Warner-AT&T merger

Just when we thought the AT&T–Time Warner merger was finally a done deal after a district court judge ruled in its favor last month, it seems not everyone wants to accept its terms. The Justice Department has filed to appeal the approval, according to a court document spotted by CNBC, which could reverse the deal if the DOJ wins. New Wireless Tech Will Free Us From the Tyranny of Carriers

CELL COVERAGE CAN be fickle. You might get great reception at home but spotty coverage at work or at the gym even though other carriers work fine. And even if your carrier has your entire city pretty well covered, all bets are off when you travel. Sure you can roam on other networks, but your carrier will prioritize its own cell towers, even if there are better ones nearby. And those roaming fees can sure add up quick. It would be nice to be able to switch carriers on the fly, picking whichever one happens to have the best service in your exact location at any given time.
