Apple patents watch band with adjustable built-in camera

Companies have tried smartwatches with cameras built into their bands before (hello Galaxy Gear), but the fixed position usually leads to you contorting your wrist to get a good shot — and you can forget about video chats. Apple might have a solution to the problem. The company just received a patent for an Apple Watch band whose built-in camera is designed to be positioned almost any way you like. It looks like one of the company’s loop bands, but includes an extended segment with at least one camera on the end. You’d just have to pull, retract and twist this section to capture your ideal shot.

Huawei’s P20 Pro smartphone has three rear-facing cameras—here’s what each one does

The first smartphone to boast a pair of rear-facing cameras for non-3D photography was the HTC M8 in 2014 It was Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus, however, that made the double-cam setup standard on flagship phones. Now, Huawei’s new P20 Pro phone packs a trio of rear-facing cameras, and things will likely only escalate from here. And while it may sound like a novelty, multiple imaging devices feed lots of photo and video data to increasingly powerful processors. This creates computational cameras with some real advantages over their cyclopean competition.

Amazon patent describes mirror for trying on virtual clothes

Amazon’s next move in the fashion world could be a mirror that shows how outfits will look on you without you having to actually put them on. GeekWire reports that the company has been granted a patent describing just that sort of technology. Using mirrors, screens, displays, projectors and cameras, the system is able to combine a person’s likeness with virtual images and present a blended-reality reflection that shows them in a variety of virtual background settings and wearing virtual outfits.

Leica unveils the Sofort instant film camera

With Kodak and others trying to make film cool again, Leica has jumped into the fray with an instant camera, the Sofort. It uses Fuji’s Instax format, and Leica has even decided to release its own brand of film, available in black and white or color. The German company designed the body itself, though it’s very … un-Leica like. If anything, Fuji’s own retro-styled Instaxcamera has a more Leica-esque look.

THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION IS GETTING A NEW HD CAMERA

Tomorrow, two American astronauts will boldly go where several people have gone before. In the early hours of September 1 astronauts Jeff Williams and Kate Rubins will embark on America’s 195th spacewalk, venturing outside of the ISS to make some basic repairs, including retracting a part of the station’s cooling system, a task that has been on the to-do list of spacewalker’s for a while now. The two will also install a new high-definition camera on the outside of the ISS.
