Almost 15 years after Training Day hit the big screen CBS is moving forward with plans for a TV series based on the film. Last August we reported CBS had gotten the rights to the series after a reported bidding war, which should surprise no one who’s watched the Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke led buddy cop film. Washington, long before becoming a living meme (Hey “Uncle Denzel”), won a Best Lead Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of a LAPD detective. The Training Day TV series has just been ordered a pilot.
We’ve all wondered why we have to pay a confusingly large fee to rent a remarkably shitty cable box. There’s no other choice! But if the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) gets its way, the days of being forced to fork over fees for set-top boxes will soon be over.

There’s an alternate universe in which every computer screen and smartphone can be rolled like a newspaper, and TVs come in long cardboard tubes. Unfortunately, that’s not our reality, despite a new prototype by LG.
The future of 4K video has been in doubt as of late. You see, the HEVC Advance group that’s licensing the H.265/HEVC video format (crucial to stuffing 4K into modern data pipes) wanted steep royalties seemingly everywhere, with no cap — even free services faced a small outlay. It was so pricey that tech giants started work on their own royalty-free format to avoid being on the hook. At last, though, HEVC Advance has seen the light: it’s offering a revamped licensing scheme. While it could still be costly for some, it’s inexpensive enough that it might safeguard the future of 4K content.
