The iconic musician is performing an “intimate” YouTube concert on September 7th at 8PM Eastern as part of a YouTube Original production. It’s a plug for his new album Egypt Station, as you might have guessed, but he’ll also play tunes from his Beatles and Wings days.

Hubble flies through the Milky Way’s ‘raucous star nursery’

Over the past 28 years, the Hubble Space Telescope has inspired a generation of astronomers with insanely dramatic views of the universe, but it’s hardly done blowing our minds. NASA has unveiled a new fly-through video of the Lagoon Nebula. Located in the center of the Milky Way, NASA calls it a “raucous star nursery” full of dust and star formation with “Herschel 36,” a star 200,000 times larger than our sun, at its center. Pioneer’s latest DJ controller adds push-button ‘scratching’

With the advent of more powerful software and controllers, modern DJs really don’t need to learn as much about spinning tracks as they used to. Now beginners are treated to automated cues, loops and beat matching software that take some of the art out of DJing. The latest bit of automation comes from Pioneer and its $249 DDJ-SB3 DJ controller. The unit adds a Pad Scratch feature that gives aspiring club monsters the ability to imitate eight different scratch techniques that were recorded by DJ Jazzy Jeff. Whatever track you’re playing, the scratch will automatically match up with the right tempo with a simple tap on a performance pad.

3D-printed bacteria ink could be used to treat burns

In a new study published today in Science Advances, researchers present a 3D-printable ink that contains bacteria and they say that depending on what species of bacteria it holds, the ink stands to have a number of useful applications. “Printing using bacteria-containing hydrogels has enormous potential, as there is such a wide range of useful bacteria out there,” Patrick Rühs, an author of the study, said in a statement.

Roland founder and music legend Ikutaro Kakehashi dies

It’s a tragic time for both music and technology. Ikutaro Kakehashi, best known as the founder of Roland Corporation, has died at 87. The engineer turned corporate leader got his start making electronic drums and rhythm pattern generators, but it was after he founded Roland in 1972 that he hit the big time. His company quickly became synonymous with electronic music effects, and the machines built under his watch didn’t just become popular — they changed the cultural landscape.
