This clever video perfectly captures the chaos of Shanghai—or any city, really—by showing how people can seem alone even if they’re surrounded by millions of people. JT Singh, the media artist in the video, walks forward while the rest of the world is walking backwards in the reversed footage and it’s so surreal to see.
Singh writes:
The peculiar reversal of the city’s movement against his own distinguishes his story from that of the other 24 million people taking 24 million walks in Shanghai. It’s through a heightened focus on one man’s seemingly unstructured journey that we discover the ultimate protagonist of this story: the transcendent power of using your legs for discovering a city.
It’s a visual trick we’ve seen before but it’s always so cool to watch.
